While we have enjoyed traveling many times to visit family, it was great to finally go on our first family vacation to some where other than visiting family.  The four of us packed up the Jeep and drove to Vail, CO.  It took us 14 hours with stops and at times was challenging, but the drive really went better than expected.  The weather and Vail itself were gorgeous!  I will post many pictures here (more to come) with brief descriptions underneath.  However, for the most part the scenery and the smiles will speak for themselves!

There are four wonderful playgrounds in Vail, and we made it to all of them at least once.

Riding the gondola to the top of the mountain.  The kiddos loved the ride up and down!
Earlier that day Tim took his big up the gondola and rode down the mountain.  The second time down he took a few tumbles.  However, besides getting dirty he and his bike were fine.

Piney lake is in Vail, however it took us about an hour of driving to get there since we had to drive up the mountain on a windy and narrow dirt road.  However, it was worth!  While there we went for a hike and ate lunch at the lodge.

Every Sunday afternoon in the summer there is a farmer market and art show in Vail Village.
The kids loved it because they got a free balloon.

At the top of Loveland Pass (we drove there...).  Wile Sam and Tim played in the snow,  Liz and I took pictures and then dropped and broke our camera.  That night we went to Walmart to buy a new one.

Following the parade we went to the Phoenix Children's Museum.  We all had a great time playing with the unique exhibits.  One of the best was a giant three story recycled metal "climbing tree."  The kiddos, Mommy, and Daddy all enjoyed manuvering through all the tunnels, stairs, and other by-ways.  However, the kids seemed to enjoy everything.  Grandma Sharon came with, and it was clear she loved playing with the kids in all the exhibits as well.

This morning we met up with some friends at went to a small neighborhood parade.  The parade started at 8 am to try to beat the heat, but it was still quite hot.  Despite the heat we had a nice time.  Before the parade the kiddos enjoyed playing with bubbles in the road.  The parade consisted mostly of area bikes, ATVs, and horses dressed-up in red, white and blue.  The highlight for the kids seemed a toss-up between waving our flags and catching candy.

We have trying to get the kids to understand the importance of the 4th of July.  We have been prepping for it in the house by reading books, decorating, and making special red-white-and-blue art projects (Lizzy is calling them "american flag projects").  Her awareness of it seems to be sinknig in as today while driving she pointed out at least 5 flags.  Here are a few of the art projects we have made.  If we make more I will try to post them.  BTW - if you like looking at the kiddo's art projects, then check out the NEW page above titled "art projects!"

Lizzy's collage:  She and I went through magazines and cut-out all the pictures related to the 4th of July.  She then glued most of them on the cardboard - I only helped her with the last few when she started to "run out of room."

Sammy's collage:  he spent most of his time speareding out the glue on the red paper.  He then POUNDED these few pieces of magazine and paper on to the page.

Sammy's fireworks:  he really enjoys squeezing out the glitter glue and then spreading it on the page with paint brushes.
